Peter Stathopoulos is an entertainment and tax attorney and partner in the firm’s Entertainment, Sports and Media Department. Mr. Stathopoulos has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of state and local taxation and economic development incentives, with a focus in entertainment tax incentives. He represents major motion picture studios, national broadcasters, cable companies, independent film production companies and others in the entertainment industry.
In 2008, Mr. Stathopoulos assisted in drafting a portion of the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, which helped make Georgia one of the leading U.S. destinations for film, television and digital entertainment productions. Additionally, he has helped draft legislation expanding a variety of Georgia tax credits to apply to the broadcasting industry. Mr. Stathopoulos currently serves as an entertainment industry advisor to the Georgia Department of Revenue, and also serves as Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Georgia Production Partnership, and is on is on the Steering Committee of the Georgia Screen Entertainment Coalition.
Mr. Stathopoulos has extensive experience representing clients in Georgia entertainment incentive deals. Since 2009, he has advised clients in deals exceeding $250 million. Mr. Stathopoulos works closely with the Georgia Film Office and Georgia Department of Revenue to represent his clients’ interests. He also represents lenders in film tax credit lending deals. In addition to his entertainment work, Mr. Stathopoulos also guides clients through state and local tax controversy matters, from audit up to litigation in Georgia’s trial and appellate courts.
Mr. Stathopoulos is a frequent speaker an author on entertainment incentives and state and local tax issues. He has spoken to various organizations including, the Southeastern Association of Tax Administrators (SEATA), the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), the Institute for Continuing Legal Education in Georgia (ICLE), the Atlanta Tax Club, Tax Executives Institute (TEI), Lorman Educational Services, and various state departments of revenue. Additionally, he has been published and quoted by Variety, Total Retail, Oz, Atlanta Business Chronicle, The Journal of Multistate Taxation and State Tax Notes. Mr. Stathopoulos has also served as a past Chair of the Taxation Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia.
Prior to joining Taylor English, Mr. Stathopoulos was a member of a regional law firm where he focused on state and local taxation. Outside of his role with Taylor English, he is a partner in Bennett Thrasher’s State & Local Tax practice and leader of their firm’s Entertainment practice.
