Jay Patton is a trial attorney who defends companies and individuals in a variety of matters, including personal injury litigation, commercial contract litigation and insurance coverage matters.
Mr. Patton has extensive experience providing defense services for insurance companies in both the general liability context by defending insureds, providing coverage opinions, prosecuting declaratory judgment actions, and defending extra-contractual/bad faith litigation.
Mr. Patton also had extensive experience representing manufacturers and other companies in litigation involving commercial contracts and warranties involving the sale of goods and application of the Uniform Commercial Code.
Mr. Patton regularly counsels clients on issues outside of litigation, often in an effort to avoid litigation altogether. These services include rapid response investigation and analysis of catastrophic manufacturing events, pre-litigation commercial contract analysis, and risk assessment counseling.

Commercial Contracts
- Securing a walk-away settlement on behalf of small technology company who was wrongfully sued by a large international manufacturer for breach of contract, breach of warranty and fraud.
- Defeating a plaintiff’s request for an injunction and securing summary judgment in a business tort action seeking in excess of $20 million in damages against a renewable energy start-up and,
- Securing dismissal of a restrictive covenant declaratory judgment action brought by an executive against his former employer seeking to declare his negotiated noncompete and nonsolicitation agreements unenforceable, and
- Winning dismissal of a privacy action brought against a national bank by a former customer and successfully defending that dismissal on appeal.
Insurance Coverage and Personal Injury Defense
- Secured a defense verdict in Gwinnett County, Georgia on behalf of his client who was sued for personal injury damages after her vehicle was struck by a vehicle in an intersection that failed to yield the right of way, but nonetheless sued her for damages.
- Managing national and regional defense programs across multiple jurisdictions for large national companies faced with repetitive consumer litigation,
- Defeating a plaintiff’s request for an injunction and securing summary judgment in a business tort action seeking in excess of $20 million in damages against a renewable energy start-up and,

Prior to joining Taylor English, Mr. Patton served as senior counsel at Georgia-Pacific LLC. Prior to that, Mr. Patton practiced as a partner with a prestigious, international law firm and a national, general practice AmLaw 100 firm.

Experience
Defended client in a clear liability accident that the Plaintiff claimed caused the need for undergo surgery on his cervical spine. Causation of the injury was disputed and taken to a jury. Plaintiff’s counsel requested over $200,000 in damages. The jury returned a verdict of $1,860.
With only a month to prepare for trial, successfully defended client in a pedestrian versus automobile personal injury action in DeKalb County where the pedestrian was injured while crossing a busy street. The pedestrian claimed she was crossing in the crosswalk and had the walk sign when she entered the cross walk.
