"Data Security and Privacy Best Practices," Lodging Magazine

October 21, 2014

On October 15, 2014, Lodging Magazine published Mitzi Hill’s article, “Data Security and Privacy Best Practices.” As 2014 continues to be the year of data security headlines in the United States, Ms. Hill suggests several trends to pay attention to within the hotel and hospitality industries, including federal privacy enforcement actions; civil class actions; state data breach notice laws; and emerging consensus about best practice to plan for and respond to data beaches. The article notes that while there is no national law in the U.S. governing data privacy or practices for the hospitality, the Federal Trade Commission has stepped in at times to fill the void. In addition, Ms. Hill provides thoughtful insight into the trends in data breach class actions and the changing state data breach laws.
